Before & After Care
Before a Treatment
- Avoid shaving the treatment area for at least 2–3 days before your appointment. The hair needs to be long enough for electrolysis to be performed properly.
- Drink plenty of water prior to your appointment. Making sure you and your skin are hydrated is important for treatment efficacy. Dehydrated follicles are more difficult to treat. Hydration will also help your skin heal more quickly.
- If you are having electrolysis on your face, do not wear any makeup. Please remove makeup from the face before your appointment.
- If you are having electrolysis done on your underarms, do not wear any deodorant on the day of the appointment.
- Your diet can affect your sensitivity. Avoid stimulants like caffeine, chocolate, or sugar on the day of your appointment.
- For 48 hours before your appointment, avoid sun exposure on the treatment area.
- Female clients may find that they are more sensitive during or right before their menstrual cycle and may want to avoid making appointments during that time.
- Many clients find that taking a pain reliever 30 minutes prior to their appointment makes their treatment more comfortable.
- Hygiene is extremely important, especially when working in private areas. Please make sure these areas are clean before coming to your appointment.
- Stop using Retin-A, Tazorac, or any serious retinoid for at least 1 week prior to your electrolysis treatment.
- Accutane should be stopped at least 6 months before electrolysis.
After a Treatment
- Following your treatment, do not rub, scratch, or squeeze the treatment area. You run the risk of transferring bacteria from your hands to treated areas if you touch your skin. This can result in whiteheads (breakouts).
- If small scabs appear, please do not scratch them away. This could cause scarring. Allow them to fall off naturally. This is nature’s way of healing the follicle that we have treated (the scabs are lymph fluid that has drained out the follicle and dried up). Keeping the area moisturized will often curtail the formation of scabs.
- Do not wear makeup over the treated area for at least 24 hours.
- Avoid fragranced or alcohol-based products.
- Washing your face with a mild face wash will avoid irritation. Anything from Cerave is highly recommended, as all their products have ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which will aid in the healing of your skin.
- You can apply our personal favorite Cerave Healing Ointment to the treated area during the healing process. This ointment contains a handful of great ingredients for the skin and its health that anyone can use.
- Ice can be applied to the treated area to reduce swelling if necessary, but don’t place it directly on the skin.
- Avoid excessive sweating if having work done below the neck for 24 hours. Sweat can cause bacteria to enter the open follicles and cause a minor infection.
- Avoid sun exposure for the next 3–4 days. Exposing the treated area to the sun can result in hyperpigmentation. Always apply sunscreen and reapply. In general, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours for consistent protection.
- Do not swim in a chlorinated pool for the first 48 hours following treatment.
- If you can’t make it in as soon as you’d like for your next treatment, you can shave the unwanted hair in between appointments! Please do not pull any hair from the follicle, as this will prolong the electrolysis process.
